What can you build with a shipping container? Thirteen projects people actually set up, with a free plan for each
Most people who buy a shipping container turn it into one of a handful of rooms: a workshop, a hunting camp gear room, a farm feed room, a tack room, a tool crib, a garage for a car or boat, or dry storage for storm season. Below are thirteen of them, each drawn to the real box with a free seven-sheet plan, a list of what you buy locally, and the container plus kit as one package delivered by ZIP.
Thirteen container projects, each with a free plan

Workshop Box · 40ft standard
A 40ft shop: 16 ft shelving wall, bench at the far end, cord-in power, level floor. No welding, no cutting.

Hunting Camp Box · 40ft high cube
A four-wheeler bay inside the doors, feed on pallets, a hook wall for bows and packs, an 8 ft shelf run, a solar vent. One cut (the vent).

Farm Feed Room · 20ft standard
Two pallets of feed by the doors, shelving for minerals and meds, sealed cans for opened bags, two louvered vents set low-in, high-out.

Storm Box · 20ft standard
Generator and heavy gear by the doors, totes two high on pallets, paper up top, blocked 16" on the high side of the lot. Not a shelter.

Tool Crib · 20ft standard
A 12 ft shelving wall with a pipe rack above it, a roll-in aisle with a folding ramp at the sill, work lights inside and motion lights outside. No cuts at all.

Tack Room · 20ft standard
Five saddle racks you build from 2x6s, a hook wall for bridles, an 8 ft shelf run, sealed feed cans, two screened vents set low-in, high-out.

Landscape Crew Box · 20ft standard
Handhelds on a pipe rack, mowers on the roll-in side, a ramp at the sill, motion lights outside, a solar vent for the fumes. Gas stays outside.

Field Equipment Room · 20ft standard
The mower rolls in on a 4 ft ramp, bases, chalk and concession stock go on an 8 ft shelf run, two vents keep it dry. The drawing a board votes on.

Business Storm Locker · 40ft standard
Generator and pumps by the doors, water and supplies on pallets, records and electronics high on 16 ft of shelving, blocked 16 inches up. Not a shelter.

Car & Boat Garage · 40ft high cube
A sedan or pickup backs in on the driver's-side aisle, the boat or second vehicle takes the far end; the door is the limit, not the box. Clearances on sheet 4.

Hay & Shavings Bay · 40ft standard
About 300 square bales five high on pallets with a 3 ft walkway, shavings by the doors, vents low-in high-out. Cured hay only.

Lease Gear Room · 40ft high cube
Four numbered 8 ft shelf bays, a pallet per member under each, a shared hook wall, two padlocks on the bars. The split, drawn, before the box comes.

Office Shell · 20ft standard, one-trip
Where the weld-in man door goes, where the lights and the outlet go, what the finished room measures after furring and foam. A shell, never a dwelling.
Start with the use, then pick the box
The container is the easy part. What makes it work is the inside: where the shelves hang, where the air comes in and goes out, where the mower rolls, and what you buy at the lumber yard on Saturday. That is why every project below starts with a drawing, not a product list.
Most of these are a 20ft or a 40ft used wind-and-watertight box. A 20ft fits most town lots and holds a room's worth of gear. A 40ft is twice the floor for well under twice the money but needs about 100 feet of straight run for the truck. A high cube adds about a foot of headroom, which matters for a garage or a hunting camp with a four-wheeler. 20ft vs 40ft walks through it.
Projects by who is buying
On the farm: a feed room that keeps feed from caking, a tack room that keeps saddles from mildewing, and a hay and shavings bay that holds about 300 square bales.
At camp: a hunting camp gear room for one family, or a lease gear room split four ways between club members.
For work: a workshop, a contractor's tool crib, a landscape crew box, and an office shell you finish yourself.
For storm season: a household storm box and a business storm locker for the generator, pumps and records.
For the yard and the field: a car and boat garage and a ball-field equipment room a church or league board can vote on.
What a plan set is, and what it is not
Each plan is seven letter-size sheets: the floor plan, a wall elevation and a cross section drawn from real ISO container dimensions, a site and leveling sheet, the parts list, what you buy locally with estimated costs, and the build order. The only cut in any plan is a vent opening. Get them one at a time below, or browse all thirteen free plan sets.
They are layouts and shopping lists for storage, shop and farm use. They are not engineered or stamped drawings, and none of them is a plan for a building people live, sleep or shelter in. Permits, setbacks and anchoring are your city or county's call; see permit rules.
