A container equipment room for a landscape crew: rack, ramp and lock box

Hang trimmers and blowers on a pipe rack at eye level, roll mowers in on a ramp down the other side, put consumables on shelves, bolt a lock box over the door handles, and vent the box for engine fumes. Keep gasoline outside in a vented cabinet, never in the container.

Why crews buy a container

A crew that loads a trailer at 6 a.m. usually leaves thousands of dollars of trimmers and blowers in an open carport overnight. A used 20ft is about 150 square feet of locked steel on the yard. When the business moves, empty it and the box moves too.

Lay it out for the morning load. Handhelds hang on the pipe rack where the crew grabs and goes. The walk-behind rolls out first on the ramp. Line, blades and bags live on the shelves instead of in the truck.

The gas rule

Gasoline never goes in the box. A sealed steel room with a dozen two-stroke engines in it smells like a fuel can by August, and a can of gas inside is a fire you cannot put out. Cans live in a vented outdoor cabinet in the shade. It is in the plan's cut list.

The solar vent in the package is for the fumes the equipment itself gives off, not for storing fuel. It goes in the one opening you cut, on the end wall, and the plan set shows where.

Will a zero-turn fit?

Through a 7'8" door, most 48 to 60 inch decks clear with the deck lowered. A 72 inch deck does not. Measure your deck before you order. The 3 ft ramp handles a walk-behind, and a 4 ft ramp gives a gentler angle for a heavier machine.

The truck needs about 60 feet of straight, firm run on the yard. Set the doors where the trailer backs up. For security after hours, see jobsite container security; for a general contractor's version, the tool crib.

What a locked container changes

A carport or open trailer is the easiest theft there is. A container with a lock box means a thief needs a grinder and time. Add motion lights over the doors and set the doors facing the street or the house. One season of replaced handhelds often costs more than the box; compare it to the delivered price on the package page.

The layout, drawn to the box

This is sheet 2 of the free Landscape Crew Box plan set: the 20ft standard container drawn from real ISO dimensions, with every shelf, rack and opening placed. Handhelds on a pipe rack, mowers on the roll-in side, a ramp at the sill, motion lights outside, a solar vent for the fumes. Gas stays outside.
