Which depot serves the Pine Belt
No supplier in our feed keeps a yard in the Pine Belt. Most towns are priced from Mobile, AL — about 44 road miles to Lucedale, 93 to Petal, 97 to Hattiesburg for a 40ft, 112 to Laurel, 129 to Collins — and the US-49 / I-59 side from New Orleans, LA: 92 to Lumberton, 103 to Purvis, 109 to Hattiesburg for a 20ft, 116 to Columbia. Delivery is included in the price either way. Published lead time for a standard container is 3–7 business days from order confirmation (supplier's delivery guide).

Rivers, creeks and tornado alley
The Pine Belt's water is the Leaf and Bouie in Hattiesburg and Petal (record crest 34.03 ft in April 1974, flooding east Hattiesburg and Petal; about a quarter of Hattiesburg's property is mapped flood hazard and the city says floodwater there can rise two to three feet an hour), the Pearl at Columbia (a 25-ft crest in February 2020 was expected to reach 75 Columbia addresses), the Okatoma at Seminary and Collins (23 ft in June 2026, a flash-flood emergency on Highway 49), and the Leaf at New Augusta (31.25 ft in 2016, 200-plus Perry County homes). Then the tornadoes: the February 2013 EF4 and January 2017 EF3 through Lamar County, Hattiesburg, Petal and Perry County; the December 2019 EF3 through Laurel; the May 2026 tornadoes in Lamar County. A loaded container on firm ground is a very heavy box and is where many Pine Belt owners keep what should not be in a yard in storm season — but it is not a shelter, and a lot that floods will flood the container.

What the truck needs

- Straight run: about 60 ft for a 20ft, about 100 ft for a 40ft. The truck backs in and tilts the box off the back.
- Overhead: 14 ft clear the whole way in. In the older Hattiesburg and Laurel neighborhoods the oak canopy over the drive is the usual failure, not the lot length.
- Ground: level and firm where the box lands. Pine Belt sand drains well; the branch bottoms and river lots do not. Gravel pad or concrete.
- Gravel last mile: tell us if the road in is gravel or timber-company — a tilt-bed carrying a 40ft does not like a soft shoulder after rain.
- A failed drop is billable. Measure, then order.
Local placement and permit rules
No Pine Belt city or county has a rule written for shipping containers — we searched the Hattiesburg Land Development Code, Laurel's code and zoning, Lamar County's zoning ordinance and Lucedale's development code in full, and found nothing for the smaller towns online. A container is an accessory structure: rear or side yard, off the lines (Hattiesburg and Lucedale 5 ft, Petal and Lamar County 10 ft), and inside a city a permit is usually required; outside city limits every Mississippi county has had to issue construction permits since July 2022 (HB 1163), and how strictly varies from Lamar County's $50 permit to Jones County's 'no building codes'. Each town page quotes what its city publishes and links the office that answers:
- Hattiesburg — City of Hattiesburg — Land Development / Building
- Petal — City of Petal Building Department
- Laurel — City of Laurel Inspection Department — building permits
- Ellisville — City of Ellisville — building permits
- Purvis — Lamar County Planning & Development
- Sumrall — Town of Sumrall
- Columbia — City of Columbia — City Hall
- Collins — City of Collins
- Seminary — Town of Seminary
- Wiggins — Stone County Planning & Building Department
- Lucedale — City of Lucedale Zoning & Planning
- Richton — Perry County, Mississippi
- New Augusta — Town of New Augusta
- Lumberton — City of Lumberton
If you would rather pick one up
There is no container yard in the Pine Belt. Every "Hattiesburg containers" result online is a landing page for a seller that ships from New Orleans, Mobile or Jackson — including the one we price from. The nearest real yard is across the Alabama line; if you have a truck and a way to set the box, buying there is a fair option. We list it because it is true, not because we earn anything from it:
- Port City Containers — 6380 Spanish Trail Ct, Theodore, AL 36582 · (251) 222-2822 · Mon–Fri 8–4. New one-trip and used WWT containers; they recommend coming in and picking your unit. About 100 road miles from Hattiesburg, 50 from Lucedale.
