20ft vs 40ft: which container do you need?

Most people need the 20. The 40 is for when you are moving a household or running a jobsite, not storing a garage.

Side by side

The 40 is double the floor space for about a third more money — but only if you can take delivery of it, which is the real constraint.

The deciding factor is usually your driveway

A 20ft needs about 60 ft of straight clearance to set down. A 40ft needs about 100 ft — and it cannot be turned once it is on the ground. On a tight lot the 20 is not a compromise, it is the only option.

A rule of thumb

Contents of a 2-3 bedroom house: 20ft. A 4+ bedroom, or a house plus a workshop: 40ft. Tools and materials for one crew: 20ft. Pallets or equipment: 40ft.

If you are between sizes, take the 20 and keep it longer. Two 20s also beat one 40 when you want them in different places.
