Hay & Shavings Bay

A trailer-load of hay and a season of shavings, dry, vented and off the ground — not under a tarp. Horse owners and small cattle operations that buy hay by the trailer-load and lose a third of it to rain and mold under a tarp.

How a package arrives — read this first

Nothing is installed. You get two deliveries: the container, a used box exactly as described on its product page, set on your ground by tilt-bed truck; and the kit, each part in its own box by parcel from the accessory supplier, usually within a week. You put it together — the lock box bolts through the door bars, brackets and hooks hang on the corrugation, lights mount with the hardware in the box; a vent is the one cut (an opening in the wall panel with a grinder or a metal-blade jigsaw, half an hour each). An afternoon with a drill and a step ladder. A package is a shopping list and a plan, priced as one, not a finished build.

How much it holds

About 300 square bales stacked five high on pallets with a three-foot walkway, or 200 bales plus a season of bagged shavings by the doors. That is a trailer-load and a half under steel instead of under a tarp, where the top row goes to the weather and the bottom row goes to the ground.

Cured hay only

Hay has to be cured — under 18 percent moisture — before it goes in any enclosure, steel or wood. Green hay heats, and a sealed box makes it worse. The vents and the pallets are in the package because they are the difference between a hay bay and a compost bin; the moisture probe is in the plan's cut list because it is forty dollars and it is how you know.

What arrives and how

The container comes on a tilt-bed and slides off onto the pad; the kit ships by parcel, usually inside a week. Cut the two vent openings, run the lights, pallet the floor, unfold the ramp. Stack cut-side down, tight to the far end, newest at the back.

Questions

Round bales?

A 4x5 round bale clears the door on its side and rolls in; you get about 16 to 20 in a 40ft without a walkway. Most people use the bay for squares and keep rounds in the field.

Will it sweat on the hay?

Vented low-in, high-out and stacked on pallets, no. Sealed, yes, which is why the vents are not optional in this package.

Mice?

Steel keeps them out of the walls; the doors are the gap. Bait stations outside at the corners, never inside with feed, and sweep the sill when the stack goes in.
