Rent or buy a shipping container?
Rent if you need it for under about eighteen months or you are not certain how long you need it. Buy if it is becoming permanent infrastructure on your property — but remember that buying means you also own delivery, placement, maintenance and eventually getting rid of it.
The rough break-even
A used 20ft container in this region typically runs a few thousand dollars to buy, plus delivery. Against typical advertised monthly rents, the arithmetic starts favouring purchase somewhere past a year and a half of continuous use.
Run it yourself with the actual numbers you are quoted: purchase price plus delivery, divided by the monthly rent you have been offered, gives you the month where buying pulls ahead. It is worth doing, because renting one for four years by accident is a common and expensive mistake.
What ownership actually includes
Delivery both ways is yours. So is any repair, repainting, and re-siting if you change your mind about where it goes.
And resale — a used container is not hard to sell, but it is not liquid either. Renting means you say the word and it leaves.
