How much does a shipping container weigh?
An empty 20ft steel shipping container weighs roughly 4,800-5,000 lbs, and an empty 40ft weighs roughly 8,000-8,600 lbs. Loaded, they can legally carry several times that — which is why the ground and the approach matter more than the empty weight suggests.

What you can actually put in one
Household goods rarely get anywhere near the structural limit — you run out of space long before weight. Dense material is different: tile, brick, tools, paper records and equipment add up fast.
If you are storing anything genuinely heavy, say so when you arrange the rental so the yard can advise on ground and blocking.
