Container on your property vs a storage unit across town
Past about three months a container on your own property usually costs less than a comparable self-storage unit once you count the driving, and it is far more convenient. Under two months the storage unit usually wins, because the one-time delivery and collection charge is paid up front and has not had time to spread out.
Where a container wins
It is where you are — no drive, no gate code, no hours. Loading is one trip instead of two, because with a unit you load a truck, drive, and unload at both ends.
Doors are 8ft wide at ground level, so big awkward things go straight in with no ramp, no stairs and no lift. On a jobsite, tools stay put instead of being loaded out every night.
Where a storage unit wins
You have nowhere to put it — no room for the clearance, an HOA that will not allow it, or no firm ground.
Climate control. A steel box in a Mississippi August gets hot; records, electronics, instruments and anything that warps want conditioned air.
Very short terms, where the one-time delivery charge dominates the bill.
