Container on your property vs a storage unit across town
We rent containers, so take this with the appropriate salt — but there are real cases where a storage unit is the better answer, and we would rather say so.
Where a container wins
- It is where you are. No drive, no gate code, no hours. You load it in your bathrobe at 6am.
- Loading is one trip, not two. With a unit you load a truck, drive, unload. Twice, coming and going.
- Big and awkward things fit. Doors are 8ft wide at ground level — no ramp, no stairs, no lift.
- Jobsites. Tools stay on site instead of being loaded out every night.
Where a storage unit wins
- You have nowhere to put it. No room for 60 ft of clearance, an HOA that will not allow it, or a lot with no firm ground.
- Climate control. A steel box in a Mississippi August gets hot. Records, electronics, instruments and anything that warps want conditioned air.
- Very short terms. Our $445 delivery is paid once — over one month that is a big share of the bill, over six months it disappears.
The honest math
A 20ft at $279/mo plus $445 delivery runs $2119 over six months — for 160 sq ft in your own yard with no driving. Compare that against a 10x20 unit plus the fuel and the Saturdays. Under two months, the unit usually wins. Past three, the container usually does.
