What is the best lock for a shipping container? Lock box and puck lock explained

The best setup is a heavy padlock inside a bolt-on lock box, because the box covers the shackle so bolt cutters and pry bars have nothing to grab. A puck-style lock with a hidden shackle does the same job without the box; a plain padlock hanging in the open is the one thieves cut.

Why an open padlock fails

Container doors close with locking bars, and the handles have a hasp for a padlock. A padlock hanging on that hasp leaves the shackle out in the open, where a pair of bolt cutters cuts it in seconds. On a camp or a job site nobody watches, that is how most container thefts start.

The fix is not a bigger padlock. It is covering the shackle so there is nothing to cut.

Lock box vs puck lock

A lock box is a steel shroud that bolts over the door handles. The padlock sits inside it, reached from below, so cutters and pry bars cannot get a bite. It works with any heavy-duty padlock and takes an afternoon to install with a drill.

A puck lock is a round lock with a short shackle hidden inside its own body. It needs no shroud, but it has to fit your hasp. Either way, buy a padlock with hardened steel and keep the keys counted. Both are on the accessories page.

Two locks, and the rest of the setup

For a shared box, like a hunting lease or a ball field, two padlocks on the door bars means two people hold access and a lost key does not mean a new lock for everyone. The lease gear room shows how a club sets it up.

Motion-detecting solar lights over the doors help on a lot near a road. Where you set the box matters too: doors facing the house or the street are harder to work on quietly. Jobsite container security covers the rest.
